常用用法

    adj. (形容詞)

  • certain的基本意思是“確信無疑的”或“毋庸置疑的”,即“肯定的,確信的”,在句中常用作表語。其後可接動詞不定式,表示“相信(某人)會做某事”。
  • certain的另一個意思是“某一,某種”,在句中衹能用作定語,常與不定冠詞a連用,脩飾單、複數名詞或抽象名詞,表示“因故而未加具躰說明的人、物、地點、時間等”。
  • be certain用於祈使句,意思是“一定要設法辦到…”。
  • It is/was certain that...表示說話人的看法，其中certain 不可用certainly或sure代替。在否定句中,多接以疑問詞whether,what,how等引導的從句。
  • certain前不能用very或extremely脩飾,如需強調可用absolutely或completely等詞脩飾。
  • 短語動詞make certain的意思是“弄確實,弄清楚”,其後可接of引起的動名詞短語或that從句。

  • certain作形容詞指“確定的”時，後麪接的介詞about可省略。I am not certain (about) where he lives. 我不太確定他住在哪裡。

    (a) certain, some

  • 這兩者都有“某一,某些”的意思。
  • 1.some側重於表示對某人或某物一無所知; 而a certain則多用於對某人或某物知而不詳或知而不言。
  • 2.some可與or, or other, or another等籠統的詞連用; a certain則可與姓氏連用。
  • 3.some經常含有不在乎、不感興趣、輕蔑,甚至不贊成、不喜歡的意思; (a) certain則一般不帶或少帶感情色彩。
  • 4.a certain還可和抽象名詞連用,暗示說話者該用什麽詞來表達心裡的想法拿不太準,在許多情況下,那個選出來的詞有點不達意、不尋常,用a certain有助於削弱該詞的奇特程度。

  • 這三個詞都表示“肯定的”“確信的”,但所表示的程度有所不同。
  • 1.certain強調有充分的根據,或自己直接所知道的事情的真相。
  • 2.sure強調主觀上懷有強烈的願望或心裡沒有疑慮。例如:
  • I'm sure we'll start on time.我想我們能及時出發。
  • 3.positive比sure和certain更加肯定,強調對自己所說的話或所下的結論的正確性深信不疑,常常表現出過分的自信或主觀武斷。例如:
  • I am positive that I saw this man before.我肯定我以前見過此人。
  • As I can't be certain,I won't be positive.在我不肯定時,我不想武斷。
  • 4.名詞性從句作主語時,一般不用sure,而用certain。

  • I am certain比I am sure語氣強,前者指“不容置疑的”“確實已成爲事實的”,後者指很強的“願望”“深信”，但是I am not certain與I am not sure意思相同。例如:
  • I am certain that he has left—I saw him go out.
  • 我肯定他已走了——我看見他出去了。
  • I am sure that they'll win the game this time.
  • 我肯定這次比賽他們一定贏。
  • 我不能確定她是否過得幸福。
  • I am not certain if she is happy.
  • I am not sure if she is happy.

    • sure，certain，definite，positive

  • 這些形容詞均含“無疑的，確信的”之意。
  • sure側重主觀上對某事確信無疑。
  • certain與sure同義，但語氣比sure強，著重指有確切理由或不容置疑的証據所支持的確信。
  • definite指已毫無懷疑的餘地。
  • positive語氣強烈，指對自己的看法或作的結論的正確性有不可動搖的信唸。
